The Essential Vastu Puja DOs for Your Sacred Space
The success of your Vastu Puja and the long-term sanctity of your home temple rely heavily on proper directional alignment and meticulous organization. The most auspicious location for your dedicated puja room is the North-East corner, also known as the Ishaan corner, which is associated with the positive energy of the rising sun and is the gateway for divine energy. If the North-East is unavailable, the East or North directions are the next best alternatives. When performing the puja or praying, ensure you face either the East or the North direction to maximize spiritual benefits and connection with the divine.
Idol placement requires careful consideration. Place your deities on a slightly elevated platform, ensuring they face either the East or West wall so that the worshipper naturally faces East or North. Crucially, the idols should be kept at least an inch and a half away from the wall to allow for proper air and energy circulation. They should also not be placed directly in front of the entrance door of the puja room, nor should they face each other. The ideal height for an idol is small—between 2 to 9 inches—or at a level that corresponds to your chest when seated for prayer.
Color and ambiance play a vital role in the Vastu-compliant puja room. Use light, calming, and auspicious shades for the walls, such as white, light yellow, cream, or light blue, as these colors promote peace and purity. Critical Vastu Puja DON’Ts to Avoid Negative Energy

Never locate the puja room in the South or South-West directions of the house, as these are inauspicious and can lead to financial instability or conflicts. Furthermore, the puja room should never be situated in or above the bedroom, basement, or under a staircase, nor should it share a wall or location above or below a toilet or kitchen. These areas are energetically conflicting and must be strictly avoided.
Regarding the sacred objects themselves, avoid keeping any broken, chipped, or damaged idols or torn religious images. These items carry stagnant or negative energy and must be respectfully disposed of by immersing them in a holy river or burying them. Similarly, do not keep photos of deceased family members in the puja room, which is reserved exclusively for deities. Instead, place photos of ancestors in a remembrance area in the South or Southwest part of the home.
The puja room must be a space of pure, Sattvic energy. Therefore, strictly avoid storing items that are Tamasic or unrelated to worship within the space. This includes money, valuable documents, official papers, or any sharp objects (other than the deity’s symbolic weapons). Never keep a dustbin or waste bin in the puja room, as this directly contradicts the concept of purity. Do not allow the use of dark, dull, or gloomy colors for the walls or flooring, which can block energy flow.
Finally, avoid overcrowding the altar with too many idols or duplicate statues of the same deity, as this can create an energetic imbalance. Ensure that no item, especially storage shelves or ceiling-mounted fixtures, is placed directly above the main idols.
